Transliteration is the task of transcribing natural language text from one writing system to another. You can use this tool to let this task be done for you. Simply type or paste your text into the field, choose a standard and click "Transliterate!".
Every transliteration is - wherever possible - done according to a
given transliteration standard as defined by various national or
international organisations. Otherwise common national transliteration
rules are applied.
As each standard provides its own mapping from one
alphabet to the other, the resulting transliteration heavily
depends on the chosen standard.

Some transliterations can only be applied in one direction. These lossy transliterations are not reversible, because the mapping of characters is ambiguous.
This online tool is a simple convenience frontend that utilizes the Perl extension Lingua::Translit which has been released on CPAN as both open source and free software - it is available under the terms of the GPL (Version 2) and Artistic license.
The extension ("module") provides a simple to use object-oriented API and can easily be extended by writing intuitive character mappings in a predefined language (XML). Have a look at the Developer Manual for details, examples and templates.
Lingua::Translit was developed and is maintained by Alex Linke & Rona Linke.
For security reasons, the amount of input accepted by this frontend is limited to 50k bytes.
